For background, see Chatham Islands on Wikipedia.

The Chatham Islands are the Polynesian setting for the first chapter of The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing. They are an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean about 680km southeast of New Zealand. The island group consists of about ten islands within a 40-kilometre radius, the largest of which are Chatham Island and Pitt Island.
